A new mixed-use development designed by BBB to revitalize the long-vacant site of the former Schmidts Brewery in Philadelphia's Northern Liberties neighborhood broke ground on February 16, 2010. The site marks a pivotal gateway into the neighborhood and will ultimately include 110,000 square feet of retail, including a full service grocer. The master plan provides for 600 units of housing that will be distributed between low-rise and 16- and 26-story buildings, arranged by scale in deference to the surrounding row houses. Conveniently located near public transportation and conceived of as a transit-oriented development, the project will also include 600 new parking spaces for residents and shoppers. Designed with sustainable principles in urban development, the project's lively "streetwall" of ground-level retail and residences will create an active pedestrian-level environment that will bring added vitality to the neighborhood.
