PATH Design Guidelines

BBB’s design guidelines for the PATH commuter rail system provide comprehensive recommendations for stations and an overall visual identity for the system.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey commissioned BBB to provide guidelines for the entire PATH system and to make recommendations for the design of the public station areas. BBB worked with a number of in-house Port Authority engineering disciplines, including traffic, structural, and civil engineering, to develop guidelines that address improved station function and aesthetics, and offer direction for future efforts to maintain, rehabilitate, and expand stations. One of the greatest challenges presented to the design team included achieving a high level of brand identification with a palette of sustainable materials and systems. The new design guidelines utilize the Port Authority Sustainability Guidelines, and BBB has made additional system-wide recommendations to help the Port Authority meet their ambitious goal to become carbon-neutral.
