The University of Pennsylvania Quadrangle dormitories, known as the Quad, were Penn’s first student residences and now comprise three College Houses—Riepe, Ware, and Fisher Hassenfeld—with a total of 1,400 beds. In 2018, BBB was engaged for a feasibility study to address Penn’s key priorities: exterior restoration, infrastructure upgrades, expanded common space, increased accessibility, strengthening each College House identity, and improving residential quality-of-life, with a specific emphasis on redesigning bathrooms for enhanced privacy. Riepe was completed in Summer 2024, followed by the renovation of Ware College House and McClelland in 2025, and the final phase, Fisher Hassenfeld, is expected to be complete in 2026.
University of Pennsylvania, Quadrangle Dormitories Renovation
Philadelphia, PA

The phased renovation of the University of Pennsylvania’s historic Quadrangle elevates the student residential experience while preserving the longevity of this landmark complex.

Ware-McClelland House
In addition to student room upgrades, the second phase, Ware House, centered on a major renovation to the student gathering and dining space in McClelland Hall. This included a new facade for the enclosed loggia, a redesigned terrace with contemporary skylights, a new elevator for improved accessibility, and new collaborative study spaces.

Riepe House
The renovation began in Riepe House. As throughout the complex, exterior envelope improvements include window replacement and masonry repairs, and infrastructure upgrades increase energy performance and create more resilient electrical service. The interiors were designed with a special focus on interior air quality with robust criteria for material selection that exceeded sustainability benchmarks.
