DC Courts Opens H. Carl Moultrie Courthouse Expansion

BBB Partner Hany Hassan and Senior Associate D. Simone Elliott celebrated the ribbon-cutting of the BBB-designed expansion, which consolidated various divisions of DC’s Superior Court and Court of Appeals by providing new court chambers, administrative offices, public space, even a childcare center.

The project revitalizes the existing courthouse, a midcentury modernist limestone building on DC’s historic Judiciary Square, with a 500-foot-long contemporary addition of glass, steel, and limestone. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was held in the lofty, double-height, daylight-filled atrium that anchors the expansion, on the suspended steel and terrazzo feature stair that promotes active design and provides a backdrop for frequent events.

The C Street Addition was recently certified LEED Platinum by the USGBC for its green roof, photovoltaic panels, and robust stormwater capture and management system. It also received a 2024 Regional Best Project Award (in the Government/Public Building category) from ENR MidAtlantic.
