Vizcaya Museum, Village, and Gardens Restoration

BBB will breathe new life into the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens to increase the contemporary relevance of one of South Florida’s greatest historic properties.
BBB is restoring and reviving Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, a striking 50-acre estate in Miami’s Coconut Grove featuring a majestic Italianate palace built for James Deering in 1910, extensive formal grounds, and panoramic views of Biscayne Bay. The project—which includes the sensitive restoration of the Main House, revival of the Formal Gardens’ landscaping and fountain, repurposing and rejuvenation of the Vizcaya Village structures, and implementation of accessibility and wayfinding improvements throughout—will enhance the historic estate into a lively cultural center that provides expanded programming and greater access for contemporary audiences. Because Vizcaya is at the intersection of historic landscapes and urban development in an increasingly volatile environment, BBB is working to improve the resiliency of the property while retaining its unique heritage. While significant systems improvements to the property are necessary, period windows, doors, and the interior finishes of 34 decorated museum rooms will be preserved with sensitivity. New interpretive spaces will be opened to the public. Originally designed as the service area for the estate, the Vizcaya Village will become home to a new education and conservation center, visitor center and administrative offices, and upgraded visitor parking. BBB also completed a comprehensive Wayfinding Assessment & Map redesign for the Vizcaya campus.
