Beyer Blinder Belle Foundation Announces 2020 Fellowship and Grant Winners

Launched in 2017, the program supports the advancement of architecture, planning, and preservation through three parallel initiatives providing financial support for graduate students, community-based planning, and youth education. The 2020 programs and awardees are:

• The John Belle Travel Fellowship: Samantha Radice, University of California, Los Angeles

• Community Planning Grant: Pratt Center for Community Development

• Youth Education Grant: ACE Mentor Program of Greater New York
   

The John Belle Travel Fellowship

John Belle and Samantha Radice

Samantha Radice's research project, "The Child, The City, The Street" will explore child-friendly planning outside of the playground in Hong Kong, Albania, Germany, and Belgium. The jury was impressed by the proposal's goal to support family life and to provide more agency to children in urban areas. Community Planning Grant

For the third consecutive year, this grant is awared to the Pratt Center for Community Development in support of their initiative "Basement Apartments Safe for Everyone (BASE)" – a campaign to enable the conversion of basements and cellars into safe, legal rental units across New York City. Pratt Center serves as both a technical advisor and a policy advocate for the BASE coalition. Read about their work and the Community Planning Grant on the BBB Foundation website.

Youth Education Grant

For the third consecutive year, this grant is awarded to the ACE Mentor Program of Greater New York to sponsor scholarships for two high school students pursuing higher education in architecture, urban design, or historic preservation. ACE's mission to educate and support the next generation of the architectural profession advances the Foundation's goals to inspire young people entering the practice of architecture. The two students will be chosen by the ACE Scholarship Committee in May 2020 and announced by the BBB Foundation shortly thereafter.
