BBB’s revitalization of Rockefeller Center greatly enhances its public and retail spaces, ensuring a prosperous future for the beloved New York City landmark.
Rockefeller Center is one of America’s most significant urban spaces and an American architectural icon of the 20th century. For its most comprehensive revitalization since it was built in 1939, BBB prepared and implemented a retail and public space development plan. The merchandising concept creates an up-to-date leasing plan in a reinvented public concourse, with circulation linked directly to the exterior and new materials bringing more light to the underground retail space. All of the shopping arcades were completely rebuilt with new floors, storefronts, ceilings, and lighting, and feature an exciting mix of specialty and signature shops, restaurants, tourist attractions, and entertainment spaces. The rehabilitation of Rockefeller Plaza, now closed to vehicular traffic and repaved with bluestone to improve pedestrian safety, completes the transformation of the space into an active plaza. The famed Prometheus Fountain and its red granite backdrop were also restored and remain as the focal point.
