The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Comprehensive Building Plan

BBB completed a Comprehensive Building Plan for Washington DC’s premier performing arts center, a roadmap for capital planning.

BBB's work included surveying the site, buildings, and surrounding context, conducting interviews with key leadership and departmental staff, developing prioritized project lists, designing conceptual interventions, coordinating cost analyses, and devising an implementation plan for dozens of repairs, capital projects, and upgrades through 2022. The planning process required a thorough understanding of funding streams, phasing strategies to limit performance disruption, and a multi-disciplinary implementation strategy incorporating: building systems, building envelope, theater functionality, acoustics, life safety, security, visitor services, site circulation, parking, and a special focus on improved memorial interpretation and patron experience. The plan takes into consideration every component of the building's upkeep and operations, allowing the Kennedy Center to keep pace with technological advances, expand upon its core mission, and maintain its stature as a world-class performing arts venue.
