High Line Maintenance & Operations Facility

Working in collaboration with Renzo Piano Building Workshop, BBB served as Executive Architect for a new 4-story Maintenance & Operations Facility at the southern end of New York City’s High Line. The new facility is essential in ensuring that the park remains in first-rate condition, providing street and park-level access for maintenance vehicles, equipment, and trash collection. Inspired by the robust structure of the elevated former freight railway, the building’s structural system is exposed on the exterior of the building. The materials—painted steel, dark brick, and multi-paned windows—express the historically industrial character of the surrounding Meatpacking District. In addition to providing offices for 70 staff members, a security command center, volunteer facilities and a street-level restaurant, the building also provides public amenities including park-level restrooms and an educational meeting space.
