Francine Houben & Elizabeth Leber: Designing a 21st Century Library

May 04, 2022
In 2021, the New York Public Library reopened the doors of its largest circulating branch, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library (SNFL), after completing a three-year transformation designed by Mecanoo in collaboration with Beyer Blinder Belle.

Approximately one year later, BBB's Liz Leber and Mecanoo's Francine Houben sat down with architectural historian and professor Barry Bergdoll to discuss the project—and the ways that mission-driven design enhance and empower public spaces to serve communities now and a hundred years from now.

The discussion was hosted as part of the LIVE from NYPL series, the New York Public Library’s premier cultural series.
