A flexible framework to enliven the notable downtown core, Envision Columbus seeks to define the city not only by excellence of design but also by its livability and vibrancy.

In collaboration with landscape architect David Rubin Land Collective, BBB envisioned a strategic development plan for downtown Columbus, Indiana, a mecca of modern architecture in the Midwest. Extensive community engagement, including public meetings and an award-winning interactive website, allowed the team to collect input from many voices within the community. Envision Columbus offers a flexible framework focused on economic and social sustainability to enliven the Downtown area.

The plan identifies key catalytic projects for change including: an urban grocer, a hotel and conference center with potential for adaptive reuse of the historic Crump Theater, and new missing middle housing. Residential guidelines for existing neighborhoods played an integral role in planning to encourage home ownership, rehabilitation, and strategic new contemporary and traditional infill housing. The team studied downtown-wide systems such as traffic and roadways, streetscapes, and open space in order to build upon the successes of Columbus while envisioning an even more vibrant Downtown.
