Prominently located on the Charles River, the 6-story building constructed in 1938 houses administrative suites for the Sloan School of Management, the Department of Economics, and an Institute conference center in the former home of the Faculty Club. To improve a building that was challenged by deep floor plates, low ceilings, and warren-like layouts, the design incorporates abundant daylight, glass, and new communicating stairs that provide clear circulation routes throughout the building.

BBB’s comprehensive renovation and rooftop addition has recharged MIT’s historic Building E52 for reinvigorated academic use and institute-wide conferencing.

Extensive interviews with the Sloan School’s administrative departments determined the design of flexible suites of offices, workstations, and meeting spaces, situated in the Chang Building to provide “one-stop shopping” for MBA student services. Offices were designed to be flexible for future change by being adaptable for individual or shared use, from one to four occupants.

The crown jewel of the building is a new glass-enclosed rooftop conference center with sweeping views of the Boston skyline that accommodates 700 people and features technology, acoustics, moveable partitions, and furniture that allow for maximum flexibility.
