The renovation of La MaMa includes preservation and additions to the historic theater's 4-story red brick clad structure originally built in 1873, and not renovated since the theater made its home there in 1969.
La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club is an off-off Broadway theater founded in 1961 by Ellen Stewart. Located on Manhattan's Lower East Side, La MaMa has evolved into a world-renowned cultural institution fostering generations of artists. BBB is working with theater consultants Jean Guy Lecat and Charcoalblue to reimagine and invigorate the existing theater, reconfigure the main performance space, add a new theater workshop and event space, and improve patron and performer support areas. The work will also include restoring the historic facade and reintroducing glazing at the main entrance to enhance the visual connection to the street.
