Thurgood Marshall US Courthouse

Under a GSA Design Excellence contract, BBB led a multi-disciplinary team on a comprehensive renovation to prepare the historic Thurgood Marshall US Courthouse for 21st century use.

Completed in 1936 and sited prominently on Foley Square in Lower Manhattan, the Thurgood Marshall US Courthouse remains the preeminent symbol of the federal government's presence in New York City. BBB has performed the first comprehensive interior and exterior renovation and restoration of this Neoclassical tower, a designated national and New York City Landmark and the last project designed by famed architect Cass Gilbert. The renovation modernizes the building's mechanical, electrical, fire protection, plumbing, security, audio-visual and telecommunications systems. Interior upgrades include the addition of a magistrate's courtroom, renovation of interior spaces, and restoration of historic courtrooms. Extensive repairs to the building façade and roof were also completed. Throughout the project, great care was taken to integrate program modifications and building systems in a manner that is discreet and respectful of the original architecture. A new green roof on the sixth floor and other sustainable measures contribute to the project's LEED Silver Certification.
