University at Buffalo, Comprehensive Physical Plan

BBB’s award-winning Comprehensive Physical Plan for the University at Buffalo created a vision and implementation strategy to support the university’s goal to grow its population by 40 percent.

BBB’s Comprehensive Physical Plan for UB created a physical strategy for 20 years of growth on UB’s three campuses in support of the University’s academic strategic plan to grow its population by 40 percent. The Plan reprogrammed each of the University’s three campuses to maximize interdisciplinary collaboration, with each campus receiving carefully targeted investments to enhance its distinctive character and its connections to the surrounding neighborhoods. For the first time in UB’s history, the Plan coordinated the transformation of all three campuses as part of a strategy for regional economic growth and environmental sustainability. BBB’s physical plan provided a convincing vision and implementation strategy to support the University’s rationale for increased funding for both strategic initiatives and critical maintenance. Each improvement proposed by the Plan—including new and restored buildings and landscapes as well as parking, transit, roadway and wayfinding improvements—was budgeted, prioritized, and sequenced within a flexible four-step phasing strategy. The scope of work also included a facility conditions audit for 150 buildings and a framework plan for construction, renovation, expansion, and environmental sustainability of facilities, public spaces, landscaping, and modes of transportation.
