New World Stages

The former Worldwide Plaza movie multiplex in midtown Manhattan has been transformed into an exciting cluster of five live production theaters. The new venue includes two 499-seat theaters, two 360-seat theaters, one 199-seat theater, and can accommodate 2,000 theatergoers and as many as five different shows at a time. A lively new lobby and gathering area is at the heart of the new complex, where a wall of light-featuring projections on a metal-mesh scrim rises dramatically into the double-height space. The light wall also serves as a cue for audiences, as large numerals—one for each of the five theaters—light up behind the scrim to alert patrons that a show is about to begin. To enter the theaters from the second level, patrons pass through a series of walkways and bridges that provide an elevated view into the lobby space below.
