BBB led a multi-disciplinary planning team to study the complex development, landscape, and infrastructure issues specific to the West End to create a fully integrated design for this significant campus precinct. The West End is defined by its geologic context: a high plateau surrounded by steep wooded slopes providing spectacular views of the Connecticut River. The West End developed in the 1930’s as Dartmouth’s business and engineering schools expanded and relocated from the core campus, creating a new campus precinct. The Master Plan addresses short- and long-term growth needs of academic, research, and executive education programs, while providing improved access and connectivity, sustainable utility systems, and revitalized landscapes and ecological health. The plan serves as an adaptable framework capable of flexibility as priorities evolve.
Since the completion of the West End Master Plan, Dartmouth has implemented over $250 million in capital projects including the new Center for Engineering and Computer Science, the Arthur L. Irving Institute for Energy and Society, landscape improvements, the reopening of the historic Tuck Drive as a campus gateway, and a new below-grade parking facility.
