BBB completed the rehabilitation of the Jacob Riis Bathhouse, an Art Deco icon affectionately known as the People's Beach, and prepared its buildings and courtyards for enhanced public use.
The Jacob Riis Bathhouse was originally constructed in 1932, and its eclectic design contains Byzantine, Moorish and Moderne influences. BBB was retained to prepare a master plan that included alternative public and private uses for the buildings and open spaces, such as a restaurant, snack bars, meeting rooms, community facilities, beach retail outlets, National Park Service offices and a visitor contact station. The work focused on new, historically sensitive windows, doors, and storefronts to complete the exterior shell rehabilitation; a new courtyard design with paving, trees, lighting, and historical elements; and the rehabilitation of the Entry Pavilion, which presents a new "front door" to the complex. The Pavilion includes public meeting spaces, offices, and restrooms, in a rehabilitated, air-conditioned, historically derived interior. In the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, BBB developed a series of alternative Resiliency Plans to guide the repair.
