The contemporary addition to the H. Carl Moultrie Courthouse, home of the District of Columbia Superior Court and the busiest facility on Judiciary Square, includes six new state-of-the-art courtrooms and chambers for 21 judges, as well as holding spaces, offices, administrative support areas, and public spaces. The addition, a collaboration between BBB and IBI Group and part of an overall Master Plan for the DC Courts’ campus, enhances this court’s accessibility and security. Sustainable features include a partial green roof, solar energy and water capture and management systems, and bike racks elevate the Courthouse to LEED Platinum standards. A lofty atrium and glazed courtroom windows introduce natural light. A granite and stainless-steel fence enhances the approach to the building, while new landscape design reinvigorates the existing facade. Strategic phasing allowed the courthouse to remain fully operational throughout construction.
