Princeton University Campus Plan

A comprehensive Campus Plan for Princeton University establishes a multi-disciplinary framework for accommodating significant academic expansion while preserving the intimate, park-like character of the campus, and creating a new regional Arts and Transit hub.

The Princeton Campus Plan is the most comprehensive planning initiative in the University's 262-year history. The two-year effort began at a critical moment when the University needed to accommodate significant academic expansion while preserving the historic beauty and walkability of the campus. A robust public engagement program throughout the process included an open house attended by almost 900 members of the campus community and the public.

Taking a fresh look at the campus, the Plan establishes a framework for preserving its intimate, park-like character, which is defined as much by its landscapes as by its buildings, setting forth guidelines for the addition of an estimated two million square feet over a ten-year period. The Plan integrates the new with the old, establishes campus neighborhoods while maintaining a larger sense of community, strengthens connections to the natural environment, and creates gateways that turn the back of the campus into a new point of arrival. Sustainability features include transportation demand management, transit enhancements, ecological restoration, and sustainable landscape design that incorporates stormwater management at a campus-wide scale.

A large majority of the projects enabled by the Campus Plan have been implemented, including the Natural Sciences Neighborhood with new buildings for chemistry and neuroscience/psychology, the Arts and Transit Neighborhood with the Lewis Center for the Arts and a New Jersey Transit rail station, the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment, and a campus-wide approach to landscape and ecological restoration.
