Aga Khan University Campus Master Plan

A comprehensive master plan for a new university campus and associated community will guide development of a resilient, mixed-use living and learning environment within a spectacular East African landscape.

BBB is leading a campus master plan for the Aga Khan University (AKU) Principal Campus in East Africa, to be located in Arusha, Tanzania on a large former agricultural site. By creating a new campus, AKU will meet its goal "to provide all of East Africa with a welcoming community and vibrant educational center that will nurture the region's future leadership." Initial phases encompass academic facilities and student residences, library, campus life, sports facilities, and other common spaces. The design of the campus responds to spectacular views resulting from the dramatic terrain, and is the result of an iterative process incorporating the University's innovative learning model, designed to address East Africa's social, political, economic and environmental challenges. A long-term land use plan encompasses graduate professional schools, a mixed-use village, and Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) facilities including a hospital, schools and hotels. The overall plan creates a dynamic educational and intellectual community serving both the university and regional populations. The plan follows a Sustainability Framework that addresses critical issues of economic, social and environmental sustainability and the resilience of ecological and infrastructure systems. BBB is collaborating with Legorreta + Legorreta of Mexico City who are leading the architectural design of the campus. To ensure the project's relevance within the region, the design team has conducted extensive research on the East African context with a focus on education, culture, and the built and natural environment.
