BBB's design for a new, mixed-use facility on Baltimore's Inner Harbor creates a lively, urban waterfront environment while remaining sympathetic to the surrounding industrial buildings.
Pier IV is a 6-story retail and office building on Baltimore's inner harbor, located near the popular National Aquarium. BBB's design for the building references its industrial neighbors in scale and detailing, and specifically relates to the adjacent Power Plant in its block-like mass, stepped roof profile, brick walls, and monumental windows set in heavy metal frames. At the same time, the design presents a sleeker image than the surrounding buildings, with larger windows and continuous glass storefronts on the first two floors that are better suited to contemporary commercial needs. The nautical details of the storefronts and railings reference the waterfront setting, while the raised platform for outdoor dining, sheltering canopies, and articulated facade details strive to create an intimate yet vibrant quality. The building features high ceilings, balconies, an athletic facility, and extraordinary views of the harbor.
