Columbia University, Planning Framework

A Planning Framework for Columbia University establishes a foundation for creative and sensitive decision-making regarding all aspects of the built and natural environment on the Columbia Campus and within the surrounding Morningside Heights community.

BBB's Planning Framework for Columbia University analyzed the existing McKim, Mead and While campus fabric to identify sites for new buildings, opportunities to improve the overall appearance of the campus and strategies to accommodate the physical needs of a research university. The plan considers the larger context of the University including potential building sites within the adjoining neighborhood and establishes practical, yet visionary, guidelines for both on-and off-campus improvements including streetscapes, landscaping, plazas, building maintenance, historic preservation, and the placement and massing of new buildings. The planning process included extensive consultation and open houses with the Columbia community, Morningside Heights neighbors and local Community board.
