Temple Emanu-El

BBB's work at Temple Emanu-El restores and preserves the largest and one of the most architecturally magnificent Jewish houses of worship in the world.

Built in 1929, Temple Emanu-El features a distinctive design that is an Art Deco interpretation of Moorish and Romanesque styles, intermingling Occidental and Oriental thought. More than 70 years after its celebrated construction, BBB was engaged to lead a team in the meticulous restoration and upgrade of the virtually untouched building. Repairs and complete decorative restoration were based upon BBB's Preservation Plan, and included the replacement of the lead-coated copper roof of the chapel, stained-glass restoration, and the cleaning and restoration of all interior finishes. The temple features more than 25 varieties of marble and onyx, stained-glass windows by Tiffany, Oliver Smith and others. New light fixtures and a sound system were also installed to enhance the lighting and sound quality. The lighting scheme, designed by Sachs Morgan Studio, Inc. reinforces the spiritual quality of the space with a dramatic focus on the bimah, ark and pulpits.
