Anacostia Waterfront Initiative

The Anacostia Waterfront Initiative, a visionary plan to reconnect and revitalize vast and neglected areas of Washington DC around the Anacostia River, includes two "target areas" where intensive urban redevelopment has transformed the waterfront. The award-winning Target Area Plans provide frameworks for development, infrastructure, and open space for the Southwest Waterfront and the Near Southeast neighborhoods, long-neglected areas that were disconnected from the city and isolated from the waterfront. BBB's comprehensive vision provides a guide for public and private initiatives which, when woven together through public policy and targeted actions, results in new waterfront neighborhoods. The mile-long Southwest Waterfront plan includes over 800 units of housing, retail, hotel, and cultural uses, integrated with an existing marina and fish market to create an active waterfront esplanade unlike any space that exists in Washington DC. The Near Southeast framework plan has guided the redevelopment of a 350-acre neighborhood surrounding the Washington Navy Yard, enabling over $2 billion of public and private investment and the implementation of two exciting new city parks.
